The Grounds Management Intern will learn proper grounds management techniques and gain hands-on experience with a variety of equipment and turf situations by working closely with Winterthur’s estate horticulturists.
Dates of Employment: March 1, 2018 – August 31, 2018
Type of Position: Temporary, full-time, non-exempt, non-benefits eligible
Working Hours: Monday through Friday, 7:00 am to 2:30 pm (35 hours/week plus optional 5 extra hours)

Responsibilities: 1. Turf Maintenance: Work with turf throughout the estate, including performing all tasks necessary for good health and overall good appearance of the area (e.g., mowing, weedeating, and fertilizing). 2. Site Maintenance: Perform tasks required on paths, roads, structures, signs, walls, benches, irrigation lines, and vehicles. 3. Garden Maintenance: Assist as needed with the care of herbaceous and woody plants (e.g., planting, pruning, weeding, mulching, and fertilizing). 4. Continuing Education: Participate in a variety of trainings, plant identification classes, and field trips in order to gain a comprehensive understanding of the wider field of public horticulture.
Education: At minimum, an enrolled student or recent graduate of an accredited college or university with one semester of completed coursework in horticulture or a related field. Two years of completed coursework in horticulture or a related field, with at least one semester of study in turf management, preferred.
Experience: Minimum of three months of practical, hands-on experience in horticulture or a related field. One year of practical, hands-on experience in horticulture, with some time devoted to the maintenance of turf and grounds, preferred.
