Vizcaya Museum & Gardens is a prominent cultural institution located in the heart of the dynamic and multicultural city of Miami and boasts one of the best formal European styled gardens in the United States. The Horticulturist reports to the Horticulture Manager and is a key figure in maintaining Vizcaya’s horticultural displays and living collections through effective day to day management, and will uphold Vizcaya’s standards of horticultural practices. Daily duties include ongoing specialized tasks consisting of containerized displays, garden care and maintenance, living collections, indoor landscapes, and assistance with Vizcaya’s IPM program and nursery management. The Horticulture Division is in an exciting phase of redevelopment and expansion, and will oversee the capital restoration of the Main Gardens, establishment of an urban farm, and the expansion of horticulture into the Vizcaya Village. The Horticulturist will play a key role in the future growth of the Division, and as such creativity and vision are encouraged and expected.
Salary Range: $45,000 - $71,000
The Horticulturist will ensure effective daily horticultural operations which will include:
• Integrated Pest Management
• Living collections and horticultural management practices as directed by the Horticulture Manager
• Assistance as requested with maintenance of permanent orchid collections and temporary displays
• Safety Management
• Operation of power equipment and heavy machinery
• Application of pesticides, herbicides, growth regulators, and liquid and granular fertilizers.
• Hands – on management of urban farming operations including development and management.
• Manage crews of volunteers as required
Education and Experience
A minimum of an Associate’s Degree in Landscape Maintenance, Horticulture, or closely related field with three years’ experience is required.
Must either possess or have the ability to obtain a State of FL driver license within 6 months of hire, and obtaining a CDL / Class B license may be required. Ability to obtain Florida Public Applicator’s pesticide license within 6 months of hire is required. Best Practices Management certifications and Florida Nursery & Landscape Growers Association Certified Horticulturist program completion will be required as training opportunities become available.
Competency or position requirements
The Horticulturist position requires technical knowledge and experience in fine gardening, horticultural display, and estate or public garden maintenance. The Horticulturist will have some experience in Best Management Practices (BMP) and Integrated Pest Management (IPM) guidelines, or will be required to learn and apply learned principles on the job. The employee will be required to ensure the safe and effective application of insecticides and pesticides. Candidates must possess a working knowledge of plant identification methods and knowledge of or the ability to quickly learn a variety of tropical and subtropical landscape plants, orchids and epiphytes is required. Demonstrated nursery management experience is desired.
