Job Description 

The Director of Education & Audience Engagement is responsible for the continued growth, enhancement, and implementation of THBG’s educational programs and for developing an audience-focused culture. They will join a dynamic, collaborative senior-leadership team, who ensures that programs provide opportunities for active audience engagement that relate to the Garden’s mission and fulfill its role of providing an unparalleled cultural and educational experience to a diverse and ever-expanding community.

Duties & Responsibilities 

• Education including Adult Education; Youth, School, and Family Programs; Volunteers; Guided Tours; the Tower Hill Library; Special Events, including concerts, exhibitions, festivals, and plant and flower shows
• Audience Engagement including outreach; audience research and evaluation; print and digital communications
• Implementing non-living collections policy
• Supervising six-seven full-time equivalent employees
• Training and professional development of paid and volunteer staff
• In house and outsourced services related to marketing and communications

Education:
• Oversees development of a master education and interpretive plan
• With Education Managers, creates an array of cutting edge mission-related programs, while developing and managing existing programs, which engage diverse audiences
• Evaluates all programs for efficacy, ROI, mission support, and community impact
• With Exhibit and Events Coordinator, oversees planning and progress of museum-quality exhibitions and site-specific installations
• Participates in giving lectures, leading tours, and administering workshops as needed

Audience Engagement:
• Works to ensure outstanding visitor experience and outreach
• With Web and Marketing Designer, develops the marketing strategies for programs and events
• With Manager of Volunteers, oversees volunteer and docent programs, including development and execution of guided tours
• Performs evaluation and audience research
• Upholds and advances the organizational brand

Leadership and Interpersonal Relations:
• Serves on THBG’s senior leadership team, including participating in long range planning and expansion
• Embraces THBG’s commitment to excellence in guest services, willingly and eagerly integrating the work of the Education and Audience Engagement Department with the efforts of all other departments
• Works with Board of Trustees, assigned permanent and ad hoc committees, as well as donor stewardship
• Establishes relationships with allied organizations and individuals, regionally and nationally
• Makes presentations to the media, as requested
• Determines annual budget needs, authorizes budget expenditures, and together with department managers manages operating budget for Education and Audience Engagement department
• Supports fundraising efforts by speaking with potential donors; providing information to support the development grants, events, or other duties as required by the Advancement Department

Supervision & Training:
• Interviews, assesses, screens and hires candidates for positions in the Education and Audience Engagement department
• Trains, supervises, nurtures, encourages, assesses, and counsels paid and volunteer staff
• Fosters teamwork and mentors staff members by modelling best practices
• Empowers staff by granting authority and autonomy whenever possible
• Encourages staff to participate in ongoing professional development
• Develops and implements tools and measures to evaluate success of tasks and projects

Education and Experience 

Skills & Abilities:
• Excellent communication skills, including the ability to clearly articulate THBG’s vision; strong writing skills; high standards for efficiency, quality, and accuracy
• Skill in leading, managing, supervising, and building cohesive teams
• Ability to work with varied constituencies, consultants, outside stakeholders, partners, and customers
• Passion for outstanding customer service and experience
• Exceptional project management skills, including the ability to deliver on-time and on-budget; to organize time efficiently
• Knowledge of design development and the creative process
• Understanding of exhibition and event design/planning
• Knowledge of museum standards and procedures
• Creative thinking and implementation

Education & Experience:
• Bachelor’s degree in education, museum studies, museum education, public horticulture administration, horticulture, or related field; Master’s degree preferred
• Minimum of seven-years in a senior-level management role
• Proven track record of development, funding, marketing and managing well-attended, financially-successful programs and events
• Experience delivering successful, engaging, and mission-related programs in a non-traditional educational environment, such a museum, nature center, or botanic garden
• Extensive project management experience in a museum or creative capacity
• Experience contributing to a senior management team in a collaborative work environment
• Knowledge of current museum and/or public garden practices and trends
• Commitment to Tower Hill’s mission
