The intern will acquire proficiency in diverse skills involved in installing and maintaining garden areas, including: maintenance of cultivated areas, upkeep of garden paths, restoration / renovation of existing garden beds, plant record-keeping and labeling, maintenance of other outdoor facility areas such as the main entrance, parking areas, approaches to buildings, etc. Specific activities include raking, mulching, planting and transplanting, watering, weeding, pruning, answering visitors’ questions, plant record inventory, shoveling of soil, gravel, mulch, etc., and clearing herbaceous and woody material.
Assists with providing ongoing care and maintenance of garden areas, including pruning, deadheading, planting, mulching, and weeding.
Learns to record planting/removal records (including map locations), pesticide use records, etc. and assists in keeping these records up-dated and current.
Cleans up and removes garden debris (including dead plant material, and human generated litter)
Actively participates in the Garden’s Integrated Pest Management program for the control of weeds and pests. Applies pesticides, and other chemicals following all federal and state laws, regulations and safety policies as instructed and as necessary or as directed. Humanely traps and humanely terminates garden pests as necessary or as directed.
Learns to install, maintain, repair, and operate irrigation systems as necessary, and undertakes these tasks as necessary and as directed, with direction as needed.
Uses hand tools effectively.
Provides spot repair of decomposed granite to paths, with direction as needed.
Learns to safely and effectively operate power equipment (string trimmer, blowers, chain saws, etc.), including acquiring skills in providing routine servicing (filling and checking oil, gas, water, etc.) for same.
Reports servicing needs, equipment malfunctions, breakdowns, etc. in a timely manner.
Assists with other aspects of the Horticulture Department and Garden operations as needed, including participation in special events.
Learns to operate electric carts, including daily inspection for maintenance needs, weekly battery servicing and cart washing.
Performs other duties as assigned.
This is an outdoor physically-oriented and demanding position which requires:
Ability to walk, kneel, bend, stoop, sit, crouch and drive vehicles.
Ability to move equipment to various locations within the Garden.
Must be able to stand for extended periods of a time.
Working outdoors in inclement weather, including summer heat.
Must be able to lift and carry up to 40 pounds.
Strong knowledge of or ability and desire to learn California native plants, hobbyist gardening experience essential.
Willingness to acquire skills in the use and safe operation of manual and power gardening tools.
Ability to effectively work independently and in teams.
Strong interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to work with staff, volunteers, and visitors.
Valid California Driver’s License required.
