Job Description

Friends of the High Line (FHL) is the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation’s not-for-profit partner working to ensure the High Line is maintained as a great public space for all New Yorkers and visitors to enjoy. Founded in 1999 by neighborhood residents Joshua David and Robert Hammond, FHL advocated for the High Line’s preservation when the structure was under threat of demolition, and in the past decade, drove its transformation from an abandoned, elevated rail track into a public space where nature, art, and design intersect.

The High Line is at a pivotal moment in its already-exciting history. With nearly 8 million visitors annually, the High Line is committed to being a public park for the residents of the surrounding neighborhood and New York City. In addition to overseeing the fundraising, operations, and public programming for the High Line, FHL is responsible for the oversight of the gardens as designed by Piet Oudolf. Our gardens evoke a natural landscape employing a matrix-style planting design using native and exotic perennials and woody plants that change through succession and growth through the year and over time. Growing plants 30 feet above ground level, the elevated High Line gardens are attended to using the finest horticultural methods while working within the unique opportunities and challenges of the space.

The Seasonal Gardener is an integral part of FHL’s Park Operations team and will play an important role in maintaining the High Line park and plantings during the spring and summer seasons (last week of February - October). Working interactively with a team of gardeners, volunteers, and other Operations staff, the Seasonal Gardener will be working with FHL’s year-round Gardeners and assist them in monitoring and caring for designated park zones, including diverse and unique plantings, hardscape elements, and public use of the park.

The Seasonal Gardener will be supporting the Horticulture team while receiving leadership and guidance from the Director of Horticulture.
