Job Description 

The High Line is at a pivotal moment in its already-exciting history. With nearly 8 million visitors annually, the High Line is committed to being a public park for the residents of the surrounding neighborhood and New York City. In addition to overseeing the fundraising, operations, and public programming for the High Line, FHL is responsible for the oversight of the gardens as designed by Piet Oudolf. Our gardens evoke a natural landscape employing a matrix-style planting design using native and exotic perennials and woody plants that change through succession and growth through the year and over time. Growing plants 30 feet above ground level, the elevated High Line gardens are attended to by using the finest horticultural methods while working within the unique opportunities and challenges of the space.

A full-time, year-round member of the Friends of the High Line team, the Gardener will be responsible for the year-round care and maintenance of the High Line’s landscape and partnered green spaces. Working interactively with a team of gardeners, custodians, maintenance technicians, and High Line administrators, the Gardener’s responsibilities will include all aspects of monitoring, caring for, and reporting on designated park zones, including diverse and unique plantings, hardscape elements, and public use of the park.

The Gardener will be supporting the Horticulture team and receiving leadership and guidance from the Director of Horticulture.

Duties & Responsibilities 

Perform seasonal landscape work including planting, pruning, cut-back, clean-up, bulb planting, dividing and transplanting, leaf removal
Daily checks of garden beds and paths, clean up debris and litter
Hand-water and monitor irrigation of plantings, especially during establishment and drought
Stage equipment, supplies, and materials for daily horticulture operations
Scout for pests and disease and report for follow up
Document, report, and catalog plant-related information
Operate and maintain hand and power tools and small equipment
Assist with training and support of seasonal gardeners and interns
Supervise volunteers (individuals and groups) and Green Council youth in horticulture tasks;
Communicate regularly with horticulture staff and supervisor
Be involved and contribute to the High Line’s sustainability initiatives in landscape and park management
Act as an ambassador for Friend’s of the High Line, answering questions for park visitors about horticulture, High Line history and design, and general park information
Lead horticultural tours and assist with special programs, as needed
Participate in ice and snow removal

Education and Experience 


Two or more years horticultural experience with in-depth knowledge of plant culture, maintenance, and identification
Expertise in the seasonal and long-term care for diverse plantings of trees, shrubs, vines, perennials, grasses, and bulbs
Willing to collaborate on any and all tasks required for maintaining the highest standards of garden and overall park management
Must be a team-player; maintaining a positive engagement with the public and colleagues
Able to work overtime, weekends, and holidays as needed
Computer-literate; basic use of MS Office
Ability to operate electric equipment, power tools
Ability to walk, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and regularly lift and/or move 50 lbs with proper tools
Ability to obtain NYC Pesticide License


Degree/Certification in horticulture or related field preferred
Demonstrated knowledge of the naturalistic planting design
Valid NY state driver’s license
