Job Description 

Job Summary: Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens seeks a full-time Grounds Technician to safely provide professional landscaping services. The candidate will be responsible for performing ongoing landscaping tasks, as well as supporting the improvement of plant collections and seasonal displays within available resources. The Grounds Technician will support departmental and facility goals, our mission statement and values with a strong emphasis on customer service.

Duties & Responsibilities 

• Supports and administers the maintenance of turf and irrigation
• Performs garden maintenance duties including but not limited to mowing, weeding, trimming, mulching, blowing, planting, pruning, chemical applications and trash removal
• Operates snow removal equipment during the winter to keep all roadways, walkways and building entrances cleared and safe, requiring flexibility in scheduling
• Leads and trains volunteers, interns and seasonal employees
• Assists with installation and removal of seasonal flower displays
• Supports programs and plans for efficient operation and improved horticulture practices
• Interacts with general public, volunteers, and employees in a positive fashion
• Follows state and federal laws that address the safe use of equipment and the application, storage and disposal of pesticides
• Ensures proper use and care of equipment

Education and Experience 

• High school diploma/GED required
• 1+ year experience with plant maintenance or landscaping preferred
• A certification in horticulture or landscaping preferred
• Must obtain and maintain a valid Ohio Certified Pesticide applicator’s License within six months of employment
• Valid Ohio Driver’s License

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Knowledge of basic software programs (Word, Excel and Windows)
• Must be able to lift or otherwise move materials weighing up to 50lbs to accomplish installations and maintenance
• Must be able to work indoors and outdoors year round under a variety of conditions, including hot and cold temperatures, high humidity and wet weather
• Uses written, verbal and practical skills to provide horticultural information to the general public, employees, volunteers and peer institutions
• Must be a reliable worker who is able to perform routine tasks without supervision
• Strong attention to detail preferred
• Excellent communication skills
• Passion for plants and the outdoors
