Job Description 

Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens seeks a full-time Director of Operations to guide the development and implementation of the Conservatory’s visitor experience strategies and directs activities that are part of the visitor, customer service, and retail gift shop operations. The Director oversees building security and manages the efficient improvement, maintenance and cleaning of facilities, including set-up and tear-down of events. The Director is responsible for developing the annual revenue and expense budgets for each area, and leading and managing employees in achieving their goals. The Director also manages the efficient maintenance, cleaning and improvement of facilities, the set up and tear down of events, and oversees building security. They support departmental and facility goals, mission and values with a strong emphasis on customer service.

Duties & Responsibilities 

Provides operational oversight and long-term planning to the Conservatory’s Visitor Services and Gift Shop departments

Responsible for managing the custodial and security departments

Administers and manages departmental budget, including purchasing materials, supplies and equipment, supporting revenue generation, and processing vendor invoices and communicating them in a timely manner to the Business Office

Develops and manages implementation of the Conservatory’s customer service training program, ensuring optimal patron experiences and consistent, quality customer service across the organization

Serves as the Manager on Duty (MOD) with the help of departmental managers and staff leads to ensure the facility is meeting and exceeding standards for optimal guest experience

Works with direct reports to develop, gather, analyze, and report visitor metrics and retail sales results to make recommendations and put practices into place that increase revenues and efficiencies

Implements and ensures execution of programs such as recycling and trash disposal

Ensures compliance with state and federal laws that addresses the safe use of equipment and the application, storage and disposal of pesticides

Creates and updates operational policies

Oversees the development of a comprehensive Emergency Response Plan and coordinates employee training

Coordinates outside contractor work

Oversees bi-weekly Operations meetings to ensure communication is open amongst all departments and addresses conflicts as they arise

Participates in planning and other committees as assigned

Works to anticipate and arrange alternative parking solutions when necessary for events or high-volume visitor days

Education and Experience 

Must have a Bachelor’s degree in Business, Communication, Arts Administration, or related field

Minimum 7 years’ experience in a similar position at an organization of comparable scope and size to the Conservatory is highly desirable

Proficient in managing relationships and projects within tight time frames and limited resources

Experience with customer service, customer evaluation, and budget planning

Ability to work flexible hours and schedule according to business needs

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Organizational skills and ability to allocate resources to achieve departmental and facility goals

Expert skills in managing a large workforce and ability to prioritize and implement projects within scope, on time and within available budget

Expert skills in team building, implementing morale building programs, and supervising the work of departmental staff

Demonstrated expertise in written and oral communications

Expert skills in safety programs, problem solving and organizational skills to allocate resources to achieve departmental and facility goals

Expert ability in multi-tasking in a fast-paced environment
