Job Description 

We seek a professional who is passionate about forest health and plant conservation to join our team in advancing public gardens as leaders, advocates and innovators. This is an amazing opportunity to work for a one-of-a-kind program that brings together our strong community of public gardens and the scientific expertise of our partners (US Forest Service, USDA-APHIS, National Plant Diagnostic Network) to continue to position public gardens as leaders in the battle against significant plant pests and diseases.

The Plant Protection Program Special Project Assistant will assist the Program Coordinators by converting all existing youth education and forest health outreach materials to Adobe format and translating all content from English to Spanish.

Major Function:

The Plant Protection Program Special Project Assistant will assist the Program Coordinators by converting all existing youth education and forest health outreach materials to Adobe format and translating all content from English to Spanish.

Principal Responsibilities:

  • This position will report to the Plant Protection Program Coordinators and will:
    • Convert all original PDF materials into editable Adobe InDesign files so they can be translated to other languages
    • Translate all content from English to Spanish
    • Update materials with current information when necessary, under the direction of the Program Coordinators
  • Hours per week vary; average is 25 hours depending on projects assigned
  • The successful applicant can work from home

Job-Related Skills and Qualifications:

  • Fluent in Spanish and English, with full professional proficiency in both languages
  • Experience translating education and/or outreach materials from English to Spanish
  • Experience/education in agricultural, biological, horticultural or botanical sciences
  • Experience with science communication
  • A working knowledge of plant pests and diseases and other issues related to forest health
  • Proficiency using MS Office Suite software, including MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Basic knowledge of Adobe Suite products (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator) or other graphic design experience
  • Excellent organizational skills and strong attention to detail
  • Self-motivated and able to communicate effectively and work independently
  • Well organized, possesses a strong attention to detail, and able to work efficiently under multiple deadlines
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

Working Relationships:

The Program Assistant reports directly to the Plant Protection Program Coordinators, who will initiate projects, establish timelines and goals, and review work. As a remote employee, most of this communication will be through email and phone. The Program Assistant will also work collaboratively with other Association staff as needed.
