The Chanticleer Foundation Board of Directors announces the latest recipient of the Chanticleer Scholarship in Professional Development.
Daniel J. Hinkley, Director of Heronswood Garden in Kingston, Washington was awarded the Scholarship to continue plant exploration work in Vietnam this spring. On this trip, Dan is joining forces with Dr. Nguyen Van Du of the Vietnam Academy of Science and associates from the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, B.C. Canada.
Dan has long been committed to conservation efforts in Vietnam. He has worked with Vietnamese botanical institutions to catalogue the flora of the region and has aided in the preservation of large tracts of land as both botanical reserves and National Parks. His previous plant explorations to Vietnam have resulted in the propagation of plants from seed and/or cuttings, which have been provided to Heronswood Garden as well as other regional botanical institutions without charge. The work that Dan and his colleagues plan to carry out will expand the understanding of plant taxonomy and generate further support for conservation measures in the region.
The Chanticleer Scholarship in Professional Development promotes creativity and leadership by providing professional development opportunities for public garden staff. Established in 2008, the Scholarship has supported 50 public garden professionals from gardens of all types and sizes. It has two core components, academic study to improve leadership skills and support of travel to meet with leaders to build on that academic experience. Each Scholar has the opportunity to visit other gardens, including Chanticleer, a 47-acre pleasure garden in Wayne, Pennsylvania. The next scholarship application deadline is July 1, 2018.
