One of the most treasured landmarks of its region, Sonnenberg Gardens, greets 35,000 visitors annually and has been doing so since it opened its doors to the public in 1973. Visitors from all over the globe come to enjoy the relaxing nature and beauty of its gardens and to learn about the history of this unique place and its original owners, Frederick Ferris and Mary Clark Thompson. The 50-acre estate encompasses a 40-room Victorian mansion, nine formal historic gardens, and an antique Lord & Burnham greenhouse complex. While Sonnenberg operates in cooperation with the State of New York, it is supported entirely by the fund-raising activities of its non-profit organization. Donations, membership, park admission, and fund-raising events generate the funds needed to keep the park open to the public as well as preserve and restore the historic structures, gardens, and sculpture that make up the 100+ year-old estate.
