Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens will unite experts from a wide range of fields for One Health, One Planet. This exciting new symposium aims to understand the interrelatedness of environmental issues, their effects on human and animal health and what we can do to address them. Speakers are experts in their fields and represent a variety of organizations, such as Pitt, CMU, Chatham, and Duquesne Universities, as well as UPMC, Penn State, the Harvard School of Public Health, the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium, Shepley Bulfinch, Delos, Women for a Healthy Environment and Phipps. One Health, One Planet will be held on Wed., April 5 from 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. An opening reception will be held Tues., April 4 from 5 – 9 p.m., featuring a keynote presentation by Dr. Richard Joseph Jackson, a professor at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health. Anyone who is concerned with the health of our environment or interested in exploring the connections among environmental, human and animal health is welcome to attend One Health, One Planet.
This two-day event was spearheaded by Phipps’ Research Institute for Biophilia and Science Engagement in conjunction with Dr. Michael Lotze at the University of Pittsburgh Health Sciences. Phipps’ Research Institute for Biophilia and Science Engagement studies the built and natural environments and their intersection with human health and wellness. The symposium is among the first of its kind to discuss biophilia, or humans’ innate connection with nature, under the One Health Initiative, a movement that forges collaborations between physicians, veterinarians, scientific-health and environmentally related disciplines. One Health promotes strategies to expand interdisciplinary collaboration and communication in all aspects of healthcare for humans, animals and the environment.
