Green Spring Gardens is a 27-acre garden in Virginia’s Fairfax County that maintains 22 demonstration gardens with a wide range of annuals, perennials and woody plants that comprise approximately 5000 taxa.
In 1989, a local garden club donated a witch-hazel (Hamamelis) collection to the garden. Eventually the collection grew to represent 21 plants and 13 taxa, including many of the most readily available cultivars. In 1998, Green Spring Gardens applied to have their collection accredited through the Plant Collections Network.
Green Spring Gardens has 217 Hamamelis plants and 116 different types or unique taxa. 148 of those plants are found in the Entrance Garden and Overflow Parking Lot Garden. The second largest collection is in the Spring House Overlook, with 22 plants. The remainder of the plants are scattered throughout the remaining gardens at Green Spring, including the Virginia Native Plant Garden. Green Spring Gardens Witch Hazel Collection is one of three PCN collections focused on Hamamelis: the Dawes Arboretum and Bartlett Tree Research Laboratories and Arboretum also have collections.
