The Santa Barbara Botanic Garden is pleased to announce that Director of Nursery and Horticultural Outreach, Carol Bornstein, will present at a two-day symposium titled "Growing Natives: Celebrating California's Beauty in Dry Times".
Creating beautiful water-wise gardens with California native plants is the theme of this special program aimed at professionals, home gardeners, and native plant enthusiasts. The Saturday program at the Lafayette Community Center includes Bornstein's presentation on California native plant garden design, as well as presentations by Glenn Keator, Phil Van Soelen, Roger Raiche, David Amme, and Mike Evans.
The symposium is organized by Friends of Regional Parks Botanic Garden, California Native Plant Society, and Pacific Horticulture. Registration opens January 1, 2009. Members and subscribers of the sponsoring organizations receive a discount on registration fees. Early registration is recommended because space is limited. Healing Gardens Seminar Focuses on Healthy Aging Through a Connection with Nature--Healing Gardens: The Power and Practice of Nature in Senior Communities will be held on Thursday, April 23 at Medford Leas Continuing Care Retirement Community in Medford, New Jersey. The seminar is geared toward landscape architects, designers, master planning firms, assisted living facility managers, continuing care retirement community administrators, horticultural therapists and other related fields. It is co-sponsored by the Morris Arboretum of the University of Pennsylvania and Medford Leas, a Quaker-directed, not-for-profit community for older adults. The focus of the seminar points to the positive effects of engaging older adults in horticultural activities, therapeutic gardens, and sensitively designed landscapes in fostering a sense of well-being, promoting healing and enriching the lives of retirement community residents.The cost for the day-long seminar is $125, if received by April 15, with a student rate of $65. The fee includes continental breakfast and lunch. Six continuing education units are available for landscape architects in both PA and NJ. Learn about the physical, cognitive, emotional, social, and creative assets that young children gain through outdoor experiences, and how direct, authentic experiences in nature can be created for children wherever they live, play, and learn.
This symposium is for everyone concerned about the healthy development of today's children, including early childhood professionals, teachers and administrators, recreation leaders, pediatric healthcare providers, parents and caregivers, urban planners, environmental educators, architects, landscape architects and designers.

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection's Alfred B. Maclay Gardens State Park invites you to attend the 15th Annual Tour of Gardens. The event will start on Friday, May 1st, at 6:00 p.m. with speaker Norman Winter at the Timberlane Church of Christ followed by a reception at the Gardener's Cottage at Maclay Gardens to include heavy hors d' oeuvres, music and a book sale. Saturday, May 2, will start with a Continental Breakfast at the Maclay Gardens Visitor Center at 9:00 a.m. There will also be a silent auction, plant and book sale. The private gardens will open for tours at 10:00 a.m. and welcome visitors until 5:00 p.m. A map and directions to drive to the private gardens will be distributed at the breakfast. Ticket holders may choose whatever sequence they prefer and tour at their own pace.
Fees: Park entrance fees waived to participants. Tickets are available for $45.00 and include the speaker, reception, breakfast and tour.

Annual Butterfly Plant Sale
Butterfly gardeners will be able to start their gardens three weeks earlier in 2009. The staff at Texas Discovery Gardens at Fair Park has moved the annual Butterfly Plant Sale to a new date: May 16, 2009 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. In addition to the earlier time frame, Director of Horticulture Randy Johnson will unveil new varieties of butterfly plants not previously available at Texas Discovery Gardens: www.TexasDiscoveryGardens.org

Life in the Treetops--Canopy Expert Gives Free Lecture at Atlanta Botanical Garden
Meg Lowman, known as the queen of canopy research because of her pioneering research methods, will discuss "It's a Jungle Up There: Adventures of a Woman in Field Biology." The Philip and Elkin Alston Lecture series is made possible by the support of the Charles Loridans Foundation. A book signing will follow the lecture. Santa Fe Botanical Garden's upcoming Garden Tour is scheduled! The Garden Tours are a sensational annual event quite popular around the US – In 2009, both tours will showcase premier gardens in the historic neighborhoods of Old Santa Fe. As tour goers stroll among the properties, they will experience the ambience of the Acequia Madre and South Capitol neighborhoods, visiting private gardens, large and small. As a special option on June 7, visitors will be able to purchase in advance a gourmet picnic lunch at the historic Inn of the Turquoise Bear, which also includes a tour of the inn and surrounding gardens. The Herb Society of America Presents "Shades of Herbal Green". The Herb Society of America's 76th Annual Educational Conference and Annual Meeting will be held in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The conference will feature Sharon Lovejoy, as the Keynote speaker. Sharon is an award-winning author and illustrator of books on nature and gardening. Those attending the conference may choose from three concurrent sessions each day. General session speakers will include, Jim Adams, head gardener with the British Embassy, Don Haynie, owner of Buffalo Springs Herb Farm and Dr. Norm Lownds, Associate Professor and curator at the Michigan State University 4-H Children's Garden. Pre-conference workshops and garden tours will be held at the world renowned Fredrick Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park. An additional pre-conference tour will view the magnificent Garden at Michigan State University. New to the conference is the "Festival of Flavor and Fragrance" an experiential afternoon in a festival atmosphere to examine herbs firsthand guided by herbal experts. Peruse eight special displays and demonstrations for an up-close-and-personal look at individual herbs and herbal preparations. Observe with your eyes, touch with your hands, smell with your nose, taste with your tongue and hear the excitement while you learn through participation and having fun.
