The Santa
Barbara Botanic Garden is pleased to announce that Director of Nursery and
Horticultural Outreach, Carol Bornstein, will present at a two-day symposium
titled "Growing Natives: Celebrating California's Beauty in Dry
Times".
Creating beautiful water-wise gardens with California native plants is the theme of
this special program aimed at professionals, home gardeners, and native plant
enthusiasts. The Saturday program at the Lafayette
Community Center includes Bornstein's
presentation on California
native plant garden design, as well as presentations by Glenn Keator, Phil Van
Soelen, Roger Raiche, David Amme, and Mike Evans.
The symposium is organized by Friends of Regional Parks Botanic Garden,
California Native Plant Society, and Pacific Horticulture.
Registration opens January 1, 2009. Members and subscribers of the
sponsoring organizations receive a discount on registration fees. Early

Healing
Gardens Seminar Focuses on Healthy Aging Through
a Connection with Nature--Healing Gardens: The Power and Practice of Nature in
Senior Communities will be held on Thursday, April 23 at Medford
Leas Continuing Care Retirement Community in Medford, New Jersey. The seminar is geared toward landscape architects, designers, master planning
firms, assisted living facility managers, continuing care retirement community
administrators, horticultural therapists and other related fields. It is
co-sponsored by the Morris Arboretum of the University of Pennsylvania
and Medford Leas, a Quaker-directed, not-for-profit community for older
adults. The focus of the seminar points to the positive effects of engaging
older adults in horticultural activities, therapeutic gardens, and sensitively
designed landscapes in fostering a sense of well-being, promoting healing and
enriching the lives of retirement community residents.The
cost for the day-long seminar is $125, if received by April 15, with a student
rate of $65. The fee includes continental breakfast and lunch. Six
continuing education units are available for landscape architects in both PA

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection's Alfred B. Maclay Gardens State Park invites you to attend the 15th Annual Tour of Gardens. The event will start on Friday, May 1st, at 6:00 p.m. with speaker Norman Winter at the Timberlane Church of Christ followed by a reception at the Gardener's Cottage at Maclay Gardens to include heavy hors d' oeuvres, music and a book sale. Saturday, May 2, will start with a Continental Breakfast at the Maclay Gardens Visitor Center at 9:00 a.m. There will also be a silent auction, plant and book sale. The private gardens will open for tours at 10:00 a.m. and welcome visitors until 5:00 p.m. A map and directions to drive to the private gardens will be distributed at the breakfast. Ticket holders may choose whatever sequence they prefer and tour at their own pace.
Fees: Park entrance fees waived to participants. Tickets are available for $45.00 and include the speaker, reception, breakfast and tour.

Tours are a sensational annual event quite popular around the US – In 2009,
both tours will showcase premier gardens in the historic neighborhoods of Old

The Herb Society of America Presents "Shades of Herbal Green". The Herb Society of America's 76th Annual Educational Conference and Annual Meeting will be held in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The conference will feature Sharon Lovejoy, as the Keynote speaker. Sharon is an award-winning author and illustrator of books on nature and gardening. Those attending the conference may choose from three concurrent sessions each day. General session speakers will include, Jim Adams, head gardener with the British Embassy, Don Haynie, owner of Buffalo Springs Herb Farm and Dr. Norm Lownds, Associate Professor and curator at the Michigan State University 4-H Children's Garden.
