Greenhouse Technician

The Landscape Shop at Penn State Office of Physical Plant 

The Landscape Shop at Penn State Office of Physical Plant is currently seeking a technician to manage greenhouse and nursery crops growing from seed, seedlings, cuttings and divisions.  Propagate plants; schedule and implement the production of annual, perennial, tropical and woody ornamental plant material.  Design plant combinations.  Maintain specific plant production areas at the appropriate temperature, humidity and light levels.  Maintain cleanliness of greenhouse, head house and nursery facilities.  Provide daily care to greenhouse and nursery plants to include, planting, transplanting, pruning, watering, fertilizing, controlling insects and disease, ventilating, and controlling weeds.  Manage plant nutrient levels. Keep accurate records.  Inspect plant material for disease and insect problems, light levels, temperature and humidity, nutrient requirements, and mechanical damage.  Select plant material and organize plant material orders.  Order and maintain a stock of supplies, soil and plant materials.  Keep inventory of materials.  Keep accurate records. Prepare proper soil mixes.  Move heavy materials such as soil, stone, wood chips, green waste, mulch, compost, plant containers, greenhouse benches, soil mixes, fertilizers, and plant material as required in greenhouse and nursery operations.  Perform routine maintenance on and modifications to a variety of greenhouse and nursery equipment.  Maintain and repair irrigation systems.  Set up, adjust and maintain electrical devices such as irrigation control units, greenhouse control units, mist control units and horticultural cooler.  Select, mix and apply pesticides to greenhouse, nursery crops, plant production areas, campus plantings, etc. using integrated pest management techniques as necessary.  Keep accurate records. Interpret simple sketches and specifications.  Direct the work of and train full-time and part-time employees in the correct methods and procedures required to manage horticultural plant production.  Adjust, clean, oil and grease equipment.  Inspect equipment water level, anti-freeze, engine oil, air filters, and air pressure in tires on equipment.  Operate van, trucks, tractors, forklift, loaders, skid-steer loader and with attachment, tree spade, mowers, spreaders, seeders, conveyor, pot filler and other landscape equipment as required.   Remove snow and ice and spread anti-skid and deicing materials on walks, roads, and parking lots.  Remove brush, leaves, paper, spoil, and trash from walks, roads, curbs, parking lots, lawns, shrub beds and other University property.

Requires a Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL).  Also requires Category 6 and 7 pesticide license. Equivalent to 1 to 3 years applied trades training and 1-3 years effective experience required.

THIS POSITION IS SUBJECT TO FEDERAL DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION TESTING FOR ALCOHOL AND CONTROLLED SUBSTANCES (49 CFT PART 40), AND PHYSICAL EXAMINATION REQUIREMENTS AS PER 67 PA. CODE 231.85.

EMPLOYEE MUST BE BE ABLE TO WEAR A RESPIRATOR AND WILL BE SUBJECT TO MEDICAL CLEARANCE.

NOTE: THIS POSITION REQUIRES THAT YOU OPERATE A MOTOR VEHICLE AS A PART OF YOUR JOB DUTIES. A VALID DRIVER'S LICENSE AND SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF A MOTOR VEHICLE RECORDS CHECK WILL BE REQUIRED IN ADDITION TO STANDARD BACKGROUND CHECKS.
