Executive Director

Montshire Museum of Science

The Montshire Museum of Science is a hands-on museum located in Norwich, Vermont, consisting of more than 140 exhibits relating to the natural and physical sciences, ecology, and technology. The building is located on a 110-acre site near the Connecticut River, and the Museum's outdoor environment is a large part of the visitor experience. Fostering informal science and early childhood education for children and adults of all ages, the Museum is one of the busiest museums in northern New England, typically attracting more than 150,000 visitors annually from across the nation while reaching more than 20,000 schoolchildren in New Hampshire and Vermont.

Reporting to the Board of Trustees, the Executive Director is responsible for the leadership and management of the entire organization including strategic direction, finances, fundraising, programs, staff, partnerships and external relations. The Executive Director is charged with delivering on the mission and goals of the organization in a manner that is fiscally sound, responsive to effective practices in nonprofit management and reflects established standards for museum operations.

We seek an accomplished leader with vision, creative inspiration and a proven ability to build upon the organization’s success.  Experience working in an organization that values and sustains strong community partnerships in both public and private sectors and a high level of community engagement and impact is a must. This person must eagerly and enthusiastically take on the role as the public face of the Museum.  A background in the successful development of constituent relations that result in major individual gifts, foundation grants, corporate sponsorships and other sources of philanthropic support will be a significant factor in candidate selection.  The desire and ability to authentically blend into the community culture is expected, including a desire to reach out to multiple and diverse populations in the Upper Valley.

This person must demonstrate consistent success in selecting highly-qualified staff and developing a cohesive team of professionals. A keen understanding of what it takes to promote highly-effective, customer-centric services and attitudes among all staff, i.e. enhancing the visitor experience, is a must. A strong desire to build and support volunteer resources is highly valued.

A passion for science education programming in a setting like the Museum will be highly advantageous. A business-principled approach demonstrating a successful track record of astute financial and operations oversight and delegation is expected.  A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is required.  Evidence of continuing education in museum studies, general business, finance, marketing or related disciplines would be a plus.
