Head of Horticulture

Royal Botanical Gardens (RBG) is the largest botanical garden in Canada and one of the largest in the world. With over 2,700 acres of cultivated gardens and nature preserves, it is also one of the biggest urban nature sanctuaries and marshland restoration sites in North America. With its extraordinary land holdings, breathtaking landscapes, biodiversity, collections, facilities, educational and conservation programs, RBG is a top-rated regional tourist attraction and a global leader in its sector.
A fabulous opportunity exists for a dynamic Head of Horticulture who will be responsible for the planning and management of all cultivated garden areas. Responsibilities also include development of partnerships that are attractive to clients and contribute to RBG revenues.


Garden Planning and Maintenance

  • Participate in development of long-term vision and strategic direction for RBG cultivated lands
  • Participate in the development of long and short-range goals for horticulture in line with RBG’s mandate
  • Creates and maintains innovative and inspiring annual garden plans for RBG cultivated lands
  • Responsible for the themes and the overall look and feel of the RBG horticultural experience
  • Develops best management practices that support the management and maintenance of RBG cultivated lands
  • Develops, engages and coaches the horticultural team including staff responsible for management of collections, plant documentation and gardens
  • Ensures staff are focused on activities that support the strategic business priorities
  • Plans and establishes priorities for horticulture research activities
  • Develops funding proposals for stewardship, research and general horticultural endeavours
  • Assembles and leads cross-functional teams on a project basis
  • Develops plans to reintroduce plant propagation programs


  • Design and develop horticulture based education programs that support the long term vision of RBG horticulture and cultivated lands
  • Provide assistance to deliver RBG horticulture programs
  • Train Customer Services in the delivery of horticulture educational programs
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of educational programs related to horticulture
  • Generate articles and other information to educate and promote RBG horticulture

Knowledge Management

  • Create and manage horticulture information regarding plant collections and botanical species
  • Authoritative source of plant identification and knowledge
  • Manage all information regarding planted species at RBGActs as an advisor and expert on plant documentation and taxonomy issues

Relationship Management and Communication

  • Develop and maintain relationships with key horticulture organizations and plant societies
  • Attend / participate in horticultural events representing RBG
  • Acts as the public face of the gardens in horticulture and botanical matters such as presenting lectures, seminars, workshops and writing assignments
  • Builds relationships with relevant societies and clubs to increase the profile of RBG


  • Develops departmental budgets, monitors expenditures, revises estimates of revenue and expenditures
  • Effectively manages a large and active department with a unionized workforce.
  • Encourages and supports a clean, healthy and safe work environment for staff and the public Cooperates with the organizational Health and Safety initiatives, practices and policies
  • Other duties as assigned


  • Post secondary degree with advanced education and knowledge of horticulture, botany and the creation of ornamental and cultivated gardens
  • Diverse knowledge of horticultural research, plant documentation, taxonomy and landscape architecture
  • Strong management, interpersonal, communication, and public relations skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced challenging environment
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a team and achieve results
  • Works effectively in a collaborative environment, and is able to direct and work in harmony with a diverse group of highly motivated and capable individuals
  • Demonstrated relationship-building skills
  • Solid judgment, highly organized and ability to multi-task
  • A sense of teamwork and community
  • Able to work the hours required to get the job done
  • A clear Statement of Driving Record and Police Records Check will be required of the successful candidate(s), at their expense
