Position:  Arboretum Curator
Staff Member
Supervisor:  Executive Director
Pay Rate:  Full time, salaried
Hours: 40 hours per week, Monday-Friday (with occasional weekend hours)
Location: Chattanooga, TN

The Arboretum Curator is a leadership position with the Reflection Riding staff responsible for maintaining the Arboretum in an aesthetically pleasing and ecologically sound manner.  Working with the Executive Director, Greenhouse Manager and Horticulture Staff the Curator will oversee the Land Use Plan (Kane Plan).  The Arboretum Curator will supervise the Horticulture Staff and will report to the Executive Director.  The Curator will help to develop educational programming for botany and gardening.

Arboretum Management
• Establish and maintain the living collections of the Arboretum
• Update and maintain a collection records database, and GIS
• Field check and label plants in display beds, borders and theme gardens throughout the Arboretum
• With Greenhouse Manager, add diversity to the collections with plants propagated in our Greenhouse and Nursery
• With Land Steward, plan routine grounds maintenance activities including mowing, pruning, brush and tree removal as needed, and controlling invasive exotic plants
• With the Executive Director and Greenhouse Manager, participate collaboratively to develop and implement strategic and work plans
• Create and manage annual, weekly, and daily maintenance schedules for beds and borders and oversee general care of gardens:  watering, fertilizing, weeding, disease and pest-monitoring, etc.
• Compile annual estimates for capital items and expendables, also ensuring operations are managed and contained within agreed budget
• With Executive Director, work to ensure that green practices are implemented and followed including recycling, energy conservation and in caring for the native flora and fauna
• Work with Executive Director to conduct annual performance reviews for Horticulture Staff, based on job descriptions

Work with Volunteers
• Working with Volunteer Coordinator, help recruit and train volunteers
• Organize and supervise volunteers engaged in new plantings and maintenance of beds and borders

Arboretum Education
• Conduct seminars and workshops on native plant propagation, native plant certification and related subjects on the property
• With Director of Education, develop a master education plan for arboretum field classes and for public programs
• Establish and maintain liaisons with Master Gardeners, Wild Ones and relevant local, state, and international groups having interests such as botany, dendrology, native plants, and ecology

Additional Duties
• With Horticultural Committee Chairperson, help plan and coordinate Horticulture Committee meetings and tasks
• Participate in departmental meetings and facilitate action items according to established timelines
• Assist in other projects as needed
