Public Relations Specialist

The Morton Arboretum

Classification: Full-time, Exempt Department: Marketing

Position Summary:
Conduct public relations functions that enhance the public’s knowledge of, and appreciation for, the Arboretum’s visitor and public programming, special events, research, conservation, and philanthropic initiatives. Develop, maintain, and seek opportunities to expand contacts across all media types - print, broadcast, consumer, trade, and internet. Working closely with the Public Relations Manager, manage daily social media activity for the Arboretum.

Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations or related field required. 2+ years professional experience in Chicago-area public relations required. Must be a clear, creative writer with knowledge of AP style. Excellent writing and speaking skills required. Experience with social media programs including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, FourSquare, and Pinterest as marketing tools required. Social media management and program/contest development a plus. Working knowledge of Cision media tracking software preferred. Familiarity with a digital camera and good photographic skills strongly preferred, and the ability to create content using Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator a plus. Basic Knowledge of HTML and video skills a plus. Keeping up to date with current trends in social media and analytics required. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and experience with Gmail and other Google applications beneficial.

Success Factors:
Creative, clear communicator with knowledge of AP Style. Ability to handle multiple assignments simultaneously and quickly with strong attention to detail. Creative, innovative, and a knack for thinking “out of the box.” Ability to relate effectively with people of various backgrounds and ages. A commitment to, and ability to effectively convey, the Arboretum’s mission with genuine passion, and the willingness to continually learn about the programs and mission.

  • Work Environment: Work is performed primarily indoors, in an office setting, although travel within the grounds and buildings of the Arboretum is occasionally required.
