Horticulture Internships Summer 2014

Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens

Esteemed as the Green Heart of Pittsburgh and one of the world’s greenest public gardens, Phipps is empowered by its mission to inspire and educate all with the beauty and importance of plants; to advance sustainability and promote human and environmental well-being through action and research; and to celebrate its historic glasshouse.

GENERAL SUMMARY: Horticulture interns work with staff in various capacities to plant and maintain the public gardens and conservatory plantings. Phipps’ innovative “green” features and plans for the future are part of the educational component. Interns may participate in many of Phipps’ evening and weekend classes at no cost (except material fees when applicable). This internship provides an excellent opportunity for students interested in a career in horticulture, public gardening or landscape design to gain practical, hands-on experience in a renowned horticultural institution. The summer horticulture internship runs from May through August 2014, based on the intern’s university schedule.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Interns will work with horticulture staff, other interns and volunteers to plant and maintain outdoor gardens at the Conservatory and Phipps Garden Center. Training will be provided in such skills as watering, planting, weeding, pruning, deadheading, mulching, propagation, IPM and plant identification, as well as other aspects of maintaining the gardens in exceptional condition. Work in the edible garden and indoor gardens may also be included.

PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS: Physical mobility involves sitting, standing, walking, lifting/carrying objects up to 50 pounds, kneeling and bending on uneven surfaces. Sensory requirements include the ability to communicate and respond to staff, volunteers and public in a friendly manner.

QUALIFICATIONS: Currently enrolled as an undergraduate student at least halfway through course of study, or one year post-graduate from undergraduate program, or currently enrolled as a graduate student. Degree focus must be in an area related to Phipps’ horticulture department, e.g., horticulture, landscape architecture, environmental sciences, botany or related field. Previous experience with gardening or landscaping work is preferred. Interns must enjoy doing physical work outside in the Pittsburgh climate which is often hot and humid; also must be willing to work with high school student interns.
