Winterthur’s Internship Program provides a diverse and exciting experience for students in the fields of arboriculture, garden and estate maintenance and natural lands management. All interns participate in classes on plant identification, irrigation, turf management, and plant records; attend lectures and field trips. Limited housing is available on Winterthur site. 

Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library is the home of the former H.F. DuPont with 1000 acres of naturalistic gardens set amid the rolling hills of Delaware’s Brandywine Valley area.  Appealing to a wide audience of tourists, culture seekers, and avid horticulturists, the Winterthur Garden is a historic and rare example of a “wild garden.” 


Arborist Intern – May-August  1 position (flexible start date)

The arborist intern assists the arborist in maintaining the health and vigor of the trees throughout the Winterthur Garden while learning arboricultural techniques. The intern participates in all phases of tree care management, including ground and/or aerial pruning of trees.

Minimum Requirements

  • Six months educational and/or field experience in the study of horticulture or a related field;
  • ability to express ideas clearly, orally and in writing;
  • ability to execute oral and written instructions;
  • ability to lift 50 pounds; ability to safely operate horticultural hand tools and power equipment;
  • sufficient hearing and sight to be aware of nearby guests and staff when using or close to equipment such as mowers, weed-eaters, blowers, and sprayers;
  • basic knowledge of gardening techniques and terminology.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record!

Salary $9.50 per hour.  Four positions are available May 1–August 31 (flexible start and end dates).
