GENERAL SUMMARY: The Discovery Program Education Intern is an integral part of the education team, working in various capacities in the Discovery Program. Phipps’ innovative “green” features and plans for the future are part of the educational component. The intern may participate in many of Phipps’ evening and weekend classes at no cost (except material fees when applicable). This internship provides an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a renowned horticultural institution. The Discovery Program Education Internship runs from May through August, based on the intern’s university schedule.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The Discovery Program Education Intern will work closely with the education staff on activities throughout the Conservatory, including the following:

  • Assist in developing and implementing Discovery and Discovery Garden Day activities.
  • Prepare supplies for activities in the Discovery Garden and Edible Garden.
  • Engage in conversation and interact with children and adults, and encourage children to participate in activities.
  • Evaluate programs and guest interaction on an ongoing basis.
  • Assist in outreach activities at community events.

PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS: Physical mobility involves sitting, standing, walking, lifting/carrying objects up to 30 pounds. Sensory requirements include the ability to communicate and respond to staff, volunteers and public in a friendly manner.


  • Currently enrolled as an undergraduate student at least halfway through course of study, or one year post-graduate from undergraduate program, or currently enrolled as a graduate student.
  • Degree focus must be in an area related to Phipps’ education department, e.g., environmental social sciences, environmental education, ecological or conservation-based biological sciences or related field.
  • Previous experience working with children is a plus.
  • Must engage with children of various ages and backgrounds, transmit different levels of knowledge and project a friendly, welcoming and outgoing presence to all visitors.
  • Good communication skills, both written and oral, are required.
