POSITION DESCRIPTON
 
PART TIME – HOURLY
 
Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden is currently seeking applicants for a Part time Sustainable Plant Health Specialist. This individual will inspire and educate the team of gardeners to implement the latest in environmentally friendly IPM strategies throughout the grounds. A major focus of this position will be the intelligent use of water to ensure plants are receiving appropriate moisture while keeping conservation of water at the forefront. The sustainable Plant health specialist will help create watering schedules, and participate in, design, installation and maintenance of irrigation technology.   Additionally, he/she will provide visionary leadership to ensure Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden achieves organizational goals regarding resource use and has a leading plant sustainable health and irrigation program to inform and inspire the public. 
 
 
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Monitor and diagnose pest issues 
  • Implement and monitor strategies for using beneficial insects and other biological control methods
  • Application of pesticides 
  • Guidance and training of team members for indentifying and managing pest problems
  • Strategic planning for anticipated pest issues
  • Work with Director of Horticulture, Horticulturists and Facilities management staff to develop future irrigation plans for the Garden. 
  • Improve and maintain irrigation systems for Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden.  
  •  Work with Director of Horticulture to implement a regular irrigation reporting system, including monitoring of key irrigation related items.  
  • Install irrigation additions as plants are added and exhibits expanded utilizing industry wide best practices.  
  • Assist other department staff with projects, special events and assignments when needed.
  • Serve on internal Garden committees and assist with Garden events and projects as required.  
  • Assist with implementation of new landscapes as assigned by the Director of Horticulture or garden Coordinator.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Horticulture or Garden Coordinator.
 
Qualifications:
 
Preferred candidates will have familiarity with native plants, a bachelor’s degree in entomology, plant science, horticulture or related field, and 3 or more years of experience with horticultural pest management, with a focus on implementing sustainable and ecological management practices.  Additionally the right candidate will have basic skills in irrigation and irrigation systems. This individual must have excellent written and oral communication skills and be available  to work some holidays, evenings, and weekends as needed.
  • Bachelor’s or Associates degree or equivalent work experience in entomology, plant science or horticulture
  • Strong knowledge or ability to learn California native plants
  • Professional gardening experience. 
  • Basic skills in irrigation and irrigation systems
  • Ability to work independently and with little or no supervision.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to prioritize needs 
  • Must work well with others and be attentive to detail
  • Must have a valid California Driver’s License
 
Within six months of employment must learn, understand and apply:
  • The Garden’s software system for plant records keeping including labels, signs, planting cards, and maps. 
  • The Garden’s irrigation system 
  • Plant identification skills to the family and genus level. 
  • Show ability to learn species and cultivars and their specific challenges and needs.
  • •The California floristic province and plant community concepts and their applications within the Garden.
 
Additional desirable functions and qualifications:
  • Ability to operate heavy duty equipment (chain saw, tractor, etc.). 
  • Participation in teaching classes (through the Garden's community education program or through the Garden's volunteer training or in-service sessions)
  • Ability and enthusiasm for assisting with Garden events, and/or leads Garden tours.
  • California Qualified Pesticide Applicator’s Certificate desired but can obtain after hire
  • Basic computer skills such as familiarity with e-mail and basic Microsoft Word, spread sheets.
 
Physical demands
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods of a time and walk long distances to various outdoor locations.  
  • Must be able and willing to work outside in inclement weather conditions. 
  • Must be able to maneuver in narrow or confined places around fragile plants. 
  • Must possess ability to operate powered heavy equipment.  
  • Must be able to lift up to ~35 pounds.
