The Living Desert
The Living Desert is an AZA accredited zoo and botanical garden with over 500 animals representing 155 species, 1,600 plant species with tens of thousands of plants from desert regions of North America, Africa, and Madagascar. With a membership of over 14,000 it attracts over 350,000 visitors a year, has a $7.5 million dollar budget, with over 100 paid staff and more than 500 very dedicated volunteers.
The Living Desert Board of Trustees has embarked on a search for an experienced, motivated, dynamic and visionary individual to serve as its President/CEO (CEO). The CEO will be an outstanding spokesperson, fundraiser, strategic thinker and critical advisor to the Board of Trustees as well as being responsible for the day-to-day leadership of zoo operations. The CEO serves at the will of, and reports directly to, The Living Desert Board of Trustees.
The Board seeks a hands-on manager who will foster the full development of the staff and volunteers, as well as the ability to work in a collaborative way to secure much-needed new revenue.
The desired education for this position is a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in zoology, biology or a related field. (A Master’s degree is preferred.) The successful candidate also will have ten years of progressively responsible management experience with a minimum of three years of executive management experience in a zoo, botanical garden, museum or park.
