Director of Horticulture
Wave Hill is an internationally acclaimed public garden and New York City cultural center located on 28 acres in the Riverdale section of the Bronx, overlooking the Hudson River and the Palisades. Its mission is to celebrate the artistry and legacy of its gardens and landscapes, to preserve its magnificent views and to explore human connections to the natural world through programs in horticulture, education and the arts. In the garden’s 47 years, there have only been two Directors of Horticulture.
Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Horticulture is responsible for the management of the Horticulture Department, including supervision of 6 full-time gardeners and numerous seasonal employees. The Director is responsible for managing an annual operating budget of $850,000. Additional responsibilities include co-management with the Development Department of a volunteer fundraising group, Friends of Horticulture, and its special events. The Director of Horticulture interacts on a regular basis with other horticultural leaders, the Board of Directors, donors and the press.
The gardens at Wave Hill demonstrate exemplary plantsmanship, imaginative design and meticulous maintenance, and are often described as breathtaking, daring and innovative. The Director of Horticulture will be responsible for maintaining this reputation and is the public face of horticulture for Wave Hill. This will require a broad knowledge of plants from tropicals to hardy trees and shrubs, and woodland gardening. A strong sense of aesthetic design and creativity is essential. Work experience, preferably in public horticulture, should include a minimum of seven years in a supervisory role. The successful candidate will have strong communication skills, as well as an established breath of knowledge of the horticultural field. As a member of the senior management team, the Director of Horticulture must be able to work harmoniously in a team-based organization. In addition, the candidate must be familiar with institutional garden management including participation with capital projects, garden systems and operations.
