Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens
Boothbay, Maine

Posted: Tuesday, June 11, 2013

This is a unique opportunity for a talented and passionate individual to become a key horticulturist at one of America's newest and most dynamic public gardens. Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens is situated on 248 acres with more than a mile of saltwater frontage in Maine’s beautiful midcoast region (3 hours from Boston and 1 hour from Portland).  We are seeking an individual with a true passion for plants coupled with the desire to share that passion through hands-on, public gardening.  Suitable candidates should also have a broad knowledge of ornamental plants; high level gardening skills, propagation or other research experience; and the desire to work in a positive, team-based environment. The successful candidate must also be willing to share knowledge through teaching classes in our education department and by promoting the Gardens through public presentations and writing.

Position Description:

Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens seeks an experienced horticulturist to become a part of our dynamic team. Knowledge of hands-on horticulture as related to woody, perennial, and annual plants is a must. We seek someone truly passionate about public gardening and willing to share that passion through work and interacting with our guests. Knowledge of plant propagation is desirable in order to assist propagation efforts. The desired candidate will have a drive to seek out new plants, ideas, displays, and ways to get the job done to the highest standards.

The horticulturist is a year-round position; because of the gardens’ location, the ability to work in inclement weather, including rain and snow, is a requirement. Knowledge of a craft (woodworking, welding, masonry, etc.) is also desirable, as we complete garden projects during the winter months.

Skills / Training / Experience Required:

Minimum of an associate’s degree in horticulture or related field with a broad and hands-on knowledge of horticultural practices (planting, fertilization, irrigation, propagation, pruning and pest management) and knowledge of herbaceous and woody ornamental plants and native species. The ideal candidate will have at least 3 years’ experience as a gardener/horticulturist at a public garden or arboretum; experience in planning and presenting horticultural education programs for adults; and proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, PowerPoint or Keynote and Excel programs.  The candidate must also be knowledgeable in plant nomenclature, labeling, accession and record keeping.

Salary is commensurate with experience and includes health, retirement and continuing-education benefits.

To Apply:

Qualified candidates should submit a cover letter describing their interest in the position and a resume to:
