HSBC Children’s Garden Communications Internship

The Queens Botanical Garden (QBG) is a private non-profit cultural institution located on 39 acres of New York City public land in Flushing, New York. The Garden serves over 155,000 visitors each year; a visitor survey reveals that 75% of all visitors speak a language other than English at home. This astounding fact underscores the importance of the Garden’s cultural mission and the challenges and opportunities it faces daily in creating programs, exhibits and landscapes that serve the needs of one of the most ethnically diverse counties in the nation. The Garden has committed itself to addressing the complex and ever changing needs of its diverse community and to being the place where people, plants and cultures meet.


Queens Botanical Garden’s HSBC Children’s Garden enables children ages 5-12 the opportunity to plant, maintain, and harvest vegetables, herbs, and flowers in an outdoor learning environment. The children not only explore various methods of gardening, but also discover their surrounding environment through hands-on activities about birds, insects, trees, solar energy, water conservation, and composting. This unpaid position offer a unique opportunity for individuals with interests in communications, photography, journalism, horticulture, education, environmental sustainability and/or non-profit organizations.


The Communications Assistant will work closely with the Director of Education, Children’s Garden Program Coordinator, and other staff to build the Children’s Garden communications program, and will provide general support for the ongoing work of the Education Department.

The main responsibilities are:

  • Updating and expanding the Children’s Garden website and blog listings
  • Take photographs during the program
  • Maximizing Children’s Garden Internet reach through expanded listings and the placement of Children’s Garden stories on appropriate websites
  • Providing support for the general operations of the Education Department and Children’s Garden program, including events and other programs


  • Student or non-student pursuing studies in education, botany, environmental studies or related field or has studied one of these fields
  • Excellent writing, communication, photography, organizational and “people” skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ease with technology and skill with word processing, spreadsheet, blog writing and database programs (Microsoft Office, Creative Suite and website functions)
  • Available for occasional evening and weekend work assisting with special events

Dates and Times:

  • April – June: One or two days per week. Flexible schedule
  • Late June- August: Monday through Thursday 8:30am-4:30pm or partial days. Can be flexible.
