Toledo GROWs Urban Farm Assistant (added 3/11/13)

Toledo GROWS, the community outreach program of Toledo Botanical Garden, is seeking a passionate individual to join its community garden and urban agriculture team as an Urban Farm Assistant. This position will work under Toledo GROWs Urban Farm and Facilities Coordinator to contribute to the vision and physical maintenance and care of local food production, demonstration and education at the program’s urban headquarters, the Robert Anderson Urban Agriculture Center.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Greenhouse propagation and greenhouse maintenance.
  • Planting, cultivation and harvest for the Robert Anderson Center property.
  • Assist Urban Farm and Facilities Coordinator in collaborative brain-storming, research and/or problem solving for implementation of soil-building/amendments, irrigation, and plant and disease management systems.
  • Post-harvest handling of produce and preparation for market.
  • Oversee farm-stand distribution; be accountable for volumes of produce sales and program income ledger; deliver produce for distribution as needed.
  • Assist Urban Farm and Facilities Coordinator in organizing and tracking all farm data and updating record-keeping logs.
  • Supervision and education of volunteer and work-groups.
  • Public speaking to host tours and visitors at the Robert Anderson Center.
  • Maintenance and inventory of all farm tools, storage, greenhouses and work areas.
  • Attend weekly Toledo GROWs staff meetings.

Position Requirements

  • Prior experience in vegetable gardening; at least 1 season of diversified vegetable production and marketing, such as a farm internship/apprenticeship (preferred).
  • Passionate leader, inspired to grow nutrient-dense food within the platform of community garden and urban agriculture projects.
  • Supervisory experience of a diverse-range of individuals and volunteer groups.
  • Excellent organization skills for record-keeping, project planning and goal-setting.
  • Strong willingness to learn; ability to follow direction and supervision.
  • Team player; ability to adapt and contribute as needed to accomplish projects for the whole of Toledo GROWs mission.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Creative problem solver, with a willingness to contribute skills, knowledge, experience and/or research efforts to assist in the development of Toledo GROWs local food production, demonstration and education vision.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to work quickly and carefully, and motivate others to do the same.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Greenhouse propagation and drip irrigation experience (preferred).
  • Carpentry and mechanical skills for operation of farm tools and equipment (preferred).
  • Tractor operation and maintenance experience (preferred).
  • Livestock/animal husbandry experience (preferred).
  • Experience in growing and developing value-added products (preferred).

Position Details

This is a part time position with workers compensation and pro-rated holiday pay. Evening and weekend hours will be required during spans of the main growing season (April through October.) This position will be the primary Toledo GROWs staff responsible for weekend and HOLIDAY chores of greenhouse over-sight and animals (REQUIRED on both Saturdays AND Sundays.) In addition, this position has the potential to increase in hours, potentially up to full-time hours, during the peak of the growing season (May through August.)
