Horticulturist – Lantern Court

 

The Holden Arboretum has an opportunity for an experienced Horticulturist to take responsibility for one of our four, themed gardens. Holden is one of the largest natural arboreta in the United States. Established in 1931 on 100 acres of land, Holden currently manages over 3,600 acres in Lake and Geauga counties, with 3,000 acres of natural areas and 600 acres of horticultural collections and displays, registering more than 16,000 plants and over 2,100 species.

 

This Holden Horticulturist is primarily responsible for the direct, hands-on care of Lantern Court, a showplace estate garden on the grounds of The Holden Arboretum, and the former home of the family of Warren H. Corning, Holden’s first executive administrator and a major benefactor. S/he will report to the Lead Horticulturist and will: use sound horticultural principles to create sustainable landscapes and ensure plants are grown and cared for under optimal conditions to support their hardiness and longevity; participate in short and long range planning activities guided by Holden’s strategic objectives and assist in setting the goals to accomplish those objectives. In addition, this person will undertake record-keeping activities; develop garden improvements that maintain the design integrity of Lantern Court; plan and schedule garden tasks; lead and instruct seasonal workers and volunteers; lead garden tours; and perform other activities as required.

 

Candidates must have a minimum of five (5) years experience in garden management and/or professional horticulture utilizing sustainable techniques, and be able to identify and treat pests and plant diseases. A strong knowledge of woody and herbaceous plants with an emphasis on regionally native plants and shade gardens is expected. A Bachelor’s degree in horticulture, botany, or similar degree is preferred and a valid driver’s license with an approved driving record is required.
