Betty Ford Alpine Gardens

Located at an altitude of 8,200 feet, Betty Ford Alpine Gardens specializes in alpine plants and native mountain perennials. There are three acres of cultivated gardens surrounded by parkland near Vail Village and at the base of Vail Mountain in Colorado's Gore Range.


During the twelve weeks that the interns are employed at the Gardens they will learn a wide array of topics. They will gain broad experience in botanic gardens operations and gain knowledge of the different range of Botanic Gardens through field trips to various gardens within Colorado.


Betty Ford Alpine Gardens summer internships are full-time (40 hours per week) for twelve weeks,  June to August. One position is available in each of the following categories:



Betty Ford Alpine Gardens is seeking an individual who is currently studying Horticulture or related fields with a focus or strong interest in education. The Gardens is seeking someone who is organized, creative, and pays attention to detail. The Education intern will be instructed on creating and organizing educational opportunities for the public such as weekly children's garden programs, a 3rd grade butterfly launch, A Let's Move! vegetable garden, and horticulture therapy programs. The intern will also have the opportunity to work with grounds maintenance intern and Head Gardener on various garden maintenance projects.



Betty Ford Alpine Gardens is seeking an individual that is currently studying Horticulture or Public Garden Management. Some areas of instruction include daily garden maintenance, working with garden volunteers, plant identification, recording and maintaining collection data through BG Base software, seed collecting practices in the garden and wild, implementation of education programs for children and youth, landscape redesign within existing areas in the Gardens, ascertain information surrounding non-profit operations, and training in relation to responsibilities of botanic garden management.
