Position Available: Horticulturist I
Classification: Full-time, Non-Exempt
Department: Collections and Facilities (Display Horticulture)
General Summary: Maintain specified garden(s), collection(s), or natural area(s) in excellent horticultural, aesthetic, and ecological condition. This position is assigned to a landscape and/or garden area in a highly visible section of the grounds, where the horticulturist is responsible for the maintenance and embellishment of permanent and/or seasonal displays.
Previous Training and Experience
Associate Degree in horticulture or related field and 9 months of relevant work experience during or following academic training. In lieu of a degree, three years of demonstrated practical work experience in horticulture or related field.
Must be able to identify major plant genera. Strong interest in outdoor plants and their proper culture and care. Knowledge and experience in arboricultural work is desirable, but not required. Must be able to operate essential equipment and tools, and have a basic understanding of them, including their care and maintenance. Must possess basic computer skills.
Excellent physical condition. Willingness to work outside in all weather conditions. Willingness to work alone or as part of a team. Must have excellent communication skills. Ability to guide and give direction to assigned seasonal employees and volunteers. Must be able to obtain and maintain an Illinois Pesticide Operator's License and a Class C Driver's License, which will be subject to an annual Motor Vehicle Report to verify insurability by the Arboretum. Ability to learn basic GIS/GPS equipment skills. Work occasional weekends and evenings.
1. Most of work performed outdoors.
2. Exposure to prolonged or loud noise and/or vibrations.
3. Requires significant amount of physical activity: lifting (up to 100 lbs. assisted); bending; climbing (15 ft.); carrying (30-50 lbs.); pushing & pulling.
