Phipps Conservatory in Pittsburgh will have a paid summer Discovery Education Internship available.  I am including the text of the posting in this email; please let me know if you would prefer to have this submitted a different way!  Thank you!

Esteemed as the Green Heart of Pittsburgh and one of the world’s greenest public gardens, Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens is empowered by its mission to inspire and educate all with the beauty and importance of plants; to advance sustainability and promote human and environmental well-being through action and research; and to celebrate its historic glasshouse.

Phipps is offering a summer Discovery Program internship to students interested in gaining practical experience in all aspects of a botanical garden education program focusing on informal learning experiences.  The intern will work alongside the Discovery Education staff and volunteers in various capacities in the Discovery Program, including assisting in developing and presenting Discovery andDiscovery Garden Day activities, preparing supplies for activities in the Discovery Garden and Edible Garden, engaging in conversation and interacting with children and adults while encouraging children to participate in activities, evaluating programs and guest interaction on an ongoing basis, and assisting in outreach activities at community events.

This 16-week paid internship takes place May through August 2013 and is flexible based on the intern’s academic schedule.  Some evening and weekend work will be required.  Interns may participate in many of Phipps’ classes at no cost (except applicable material fees).

The student should be currently enrolled in an undergraduate program at least halfway through the course of study, or one year post-graduate from undergraduate program, or currently enrolled as a graduate student, majoring in environmental studies, environmental education, biology or a related field.  Previous experience working with children is a plus, and applicants must be willing to engage with children of different ages and transmit different levels of knowledge.

Interested candidates should email a cover letter and resume to Linda Holsing, Human Resources Coordinator, at  Please reference “Discovery Program Internship” in the subject line.  The application deadline is January 31, 2013.  Phipps is an equal opportunity employer.
